The Formula & Physics Behind the Math
Pressure altitude is derived from station pressure versus standard 1013.25 mb. Density altitude adjusts pressure altitude for temperature deviation from standard lapse. SAE J1349 correction ≈ 1.18 × ((990 ÷ pressure_mb) × √(T_K ÷ 298)) − 0.18.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use absolute or altimeter-setting pressure?
Use the station absolute pressure (inHg) when available. Altimeter settings already fold elevation in and will skew DA.
How do I apply the SAE factor?
Corrected HP ≈ measured HP × SAE factor (per your dyno’s convention). Always confirm the lab’s correction standard.
Why does heat kill ET?
Higher density altitude thins the air charge, cutting mass airflow and power even at the same boost gauge reading.
