How to Use This Tool

  1. Work through each inspection section the night before your event and check off items as you verify them.
  2. Select your helmet certification to confirm it is accepted for the current track season.
  3. After your first session, log outer, middle, and inner tire temperatures for all four corners.
  4. Print or save the completed sheet as a PDF to hand to morning tech workers.

The Formula & Physics Behind the Math

Tire pyrometer diagnosis compares the center tread temperature against the average of both shoulders. When the center runs more than about 7°F hotter than the shoulder average the tread is crowning from over-inflation; more than roughly 7°F cooler means the shoulders are carrying load from under-inflation. Camber is read from the inner-minus-outer delta: more than about 15°F hotter on the inside indicates excessive negative camber, while an outer shoulder more than roughly 5°F hotter than the inside means there is not enough negative camber to keep the contact patch flat under cornering load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do they check at a track day tech inspection?

Tech workers focus on anything that could fail at speed or drop fluid on the track: brake pad thickness and fluid condition, wheel bearing play and lug torque, tire condition, battery tie-down security, throttle return, fluid leaks, seat belts, and helmet certification. Most clubs also require the car to be emptied of loose items.

Is a Snell SA2015 helmet still legal for track days?

Snell publishes a new SA standard every five years and most clubs accept the two most recent cycles, giving a shell roughly ten years of eligibility. SA2015 aged out at the end of the 2025 season for most organizations once SA2025 took effect. SA2020 and SA2025 are the currently accepted cycles — always confirm against your specific club rulebook.

Can I use a motorcycle helmet for a track day?

Generally no for road racing. Snell M-rated motorcycle helmets skip the fire-retardant liner and the roll-bar impact test that the SA automotive standard requires. Some entry-level HPDE run groups permit M-rated shells, so check your event's rules before assuming either way.

How much brake pad do I need for a track day?

Most tech sheets want more than 50 percent pad life remaining, commonly stated as at least 5 mm of friction material. Track use consumes pad far faster than street driving, so starting a weekend on thin pads risks running to the backing plate mid-session.

How do I read tire temperatures with a pyrometer?

Take readings immediately as you come off track, probing the outer, middle, and inner tread on each tire in a consistent order. The center-versus-shoulder spread tells you about pressure, and the inner-versus-outer spread tells you about camber. Work quickly because tires cool fast in the paddock.
