How to Use This Tool

  1. Find the plate on the rear edge of the driver’s door (riveted warranty plate through 1969; certification label from 1970).
  2. Enter the 11-character VIN from the top of the plate to set model year, plant, body series, and engine letter.
  3. Type the BODY, COLOR, TRIM, DATE, DSO, AXLE, and TRANS boxes exactly as stamped — leave blanks you cannot read.
  4. Review each decoded field. Unknown codes stay marked so you can check a Marti Report or original paperwork.

How Mustang Door Tags Work

Through 1969 Ford riveted an aluminum warranty plate to the driver’s door edge with the VIN on top and seven coded boxes below. From 1970 the federal certification label carries the same information with a month/year build stamp. Body codes combine roof style (63 SportsRoof/fastback, 65 hardtop, 76 convertible) with an interior letter. Paint and trim are year-specific; axle and transmission codes also change meaning by year. The VIN’s fifth character is the engine letter. District (DSO) two-digit codes point at the sales office that ordered the car; longer stamps usually mean special order or fleet. Tables onboard cover common 1967–73 codes and are not a substitute for a Marti Report when originality or resale value is on the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Mustang door data plate?

On the rear edge of the driver’s door. Through 1969 it is a riveted metal warranty plate; from 1970 it is the printed certification label that also shows month and year of manufacture.

Does the plate prove a Mach 1, Boss, or GT?

Only partly. Some body codes identify Mach 1 or Grande bodies, and certain VIN engine letters identify Boss or Cobra Jet engines. A GT was an option package and is not spelled out on the plate. Plates also get swapped with doors — use a Marti Report for proof.

Is my plate information saved?

No. Decoding runs in your browser. CarCultureHQ does not upload or store the VIN or DSO from this tool.

What if a paint or trim code does not decode?

Special-order paint, mid-year changes, and single-source references leave gaps. Blank or odd color boxes paired with a long DSO often mean special order. Flagged unknowns are intentional — verify against paperwork rather than guessing.
